The battle for Water in Bengaluru
My Op-ed in The Hindu. What got us here, the solutions we can look at and is this a preview of the future in other cities?
I currently work as a fellow in the Environment team at ACT Grants, where we support early stage ventures with the potential to create catalytic positive impact on the environment. Water security is an important focus area for us at ACT for Environment and so when Bengaluru was struck with one of the worst water shortages it had seen, it got us thinking.
As we looked at the factors that have got us here - dependence on ground water, unplanned urbanisation taking away green spaces and water bodies and erratic rainfall patterns made more common by climate change, we also reflected that these are not unique to Bangalore and should serve as a warning for what the future may look like in most Indian cities.
