I love public transport; to the Mumbai Local, I could write an ode But sometimes it doesn’t work out, so I take a diesel cab down the road I skip the tiny Bisleri bottles; always carry my own water But every once in a while on my rule of ‘No quick commerce’, I do falter I avoid fast fashion, try to repurpose, thrift or swap But - for work or leisure - on a few long haul flights, I still hop I try to eat local and seasonal - doing what’s reasonable But for this coastal girl, going 100% vegetarian feels unfeasible! I keep bringing up the environment with friends, despite the eye rolls I get But over every straw-using stranger, I don’t sweat You may not be a perfect environmentalist; that’s okay, you see, But we all gotta keep trying, cause a billion drops do make the sea
Wrote this inspired by a post I saw on Linkedin titled ‘I am a climate hypocrite’ by Arundhati Kumar a few months back.
The moment you are a 'climate champion' or ‘someone trying to be sustainable’ in any way, there seems to be an expectation to be a purist and be 100% there. This pressure is unnecessary. I think the best thing to do is start wherever you can, cause this is the kind of problem where 80% of the world getting it 20% right is better than 5% of the world getting it a 100% right.
Do you identify as an ‘Imperfect Environmentalist’? Tell me more in comments!
Nice write up ,
I am a struggling Environmentalist. I too carry my own bottle of water, make & use cloth bags for shopping, segregate trash and recycle...
I stand every Sunday at Aarey to spread the word, I fight for the Aravallis... but it's not enough. It's never enough!
